The first year I grew this plant I’d not given it much consideration. It grew hardily without any serious consideration of me or what was around it; it grew to nearly six feet and since I didn’t bother dividing the plants, they grew like a small forest.
Found it extremely easy to grow over a long period of time. Readily self seeds. It’s now reproduced itself in several areas of the garden and seems to be incredibly drought tolerant. Literally pops up in areas where there’s little to no water. Seeds are very small, similar to celosia, and are shiny and black making them extremely easy to escape when planting.
Plant produces gorgeous burgundy leaves and makes an excellent salad addition. Commonly used in Asian cuisine. It’s really a richly colored ornamental/beautiful plant. Others within warmer climates should keep this in mind. Harvest leaves for salads or as a spinach alternative. Said to be quite rich in vitamins.
