Red Veined Sorrel
6 inches tall
2 feet wide
This lovely green is an amazing plant not only because it is gorgeous in the garden, it is incredibly hardy and a tasty edible. Also known as Raspberry Rumex it is a beautiful specimen whether you choose to eat it or not but do try it at least once as it makes a fabulous Sorrel Soup (a little butter, cream, broth and onion - yum!!), in salads or fresh. Makes a great sauteed green but quickly disappears when cooked.
This particular variety is not only pretty but quite rare and highly prized, particularly for those who enjoy a tart green. Best eaten when the leaves are small or in the baby stage, if allowed to get large, the leaves become tough and the tartness becomes more pronounced (a tad bitter to my palette). It is a perennial so plant it where you will not mind it existing for an extended period of time. Use it as a cut and come again green and you are rewarded with multiple harvests of fabulous greens which are hard to find anywhere but in your garden. Extremely easy to grow! My first plants were placed at the base of a tangerine tree that is growing in a pot and I completely forgot about them. Luckily, the plants didn't mind at all and have produced a steady stream of lovely reddish/burgundy veined leaves ever since. If you want it to around your entire garden, just allow it to self-seed and you will have plants everywhere. 20 seeds per packet.
